Visa types
The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) lists four visa types on its official visa page 1.
- Single journey visa, valid for one entry 1.
- Multiple journey visa, valid for several trips over up to 12 months 1.
- Transit visa, for passing through to another country. It needs an onward ticket and assured entry at the final destination. It is granted only by Gambian missions abroad and carries no fee 1.
- Short visit visa, for stays of up to 90 days subject to local security clearance. Longer stays go to the Director General of Immigration 1.
Fees
The GID visa page does not list fees 1. The most recent fee table this site found is from the 2023 budget speech, delivered in December 2022 by Finance Minister Seedy K.M. Keita 2.
Status of the proposed rates
The Point reported the new rates as announced in the budget speech. It did not name a bill, regulation or gazette notice, and gave no start date 2. Status: proposed in December 2022, not confirmed as live by this site.
In February 2024 the GID said it collected D212,454,000 in 2023 against a target of D150,000,000. Its finance commissioner linked the rise to demand for immigration services, better monitoring and enforcement 4.
Earlier fee levels
In January 2011 The Point reported a rise for non-ECOWAS foreign nationals. Entry clearance went from free to D1,000. The visa fee went from D300 to D1,000. Extension of stay at the point of entry went from D200 to D500 5. Status: historical.
Entry rules on arrival
A visa or entry clearance does not guarantee entry. The final decision rests with the immigration officer at the port of arrival. Entry can be refused to people on a security watch list or found to have a communicable disease 1.
British visitors can get two 28-day extensions from the Immigration Office in Banjul or the tourist police stations in the Tourism Development Area 3.
Visa fees are separate from the US$20 Airport Security Fee, which every passenger pays on arrival, with exemptions for infants and transit passengers 3.
